Arg Team wants Fawzia Koofi out of Picture
|“Whether or not I keep my seat in the Parliament will not stop me from accomplishing my mission”
Recently, the Electoral Complaints Commission of Afghanistan disqualified a group of candidates for the upcoming parliamentary election. Ms. Fawzia Koofi was among those disallowed to run. The people on the list are accused of having armed militias, land grabbing, and other illegal activities.
During a press conference, Ms. Fawzia Koofi defended herself, saying that, “They have made the allegations, not knowing that even the children in this country know the character of me. They want to politically damage me because I have had the courage to repeatedly stand up against the passing of illegitimate bills in the parliament by this government. They have forgotten that being delisted by a corrupt government does not cause damage to me but is an honor.” Ms. Koofi added that, “My struggle for the rights of Afghan women and justice for all the citizens of my country remains my life’s work. Having a seat in the Parliament or not does not stop me or end my fight for what is right. I will be next to my people and continue to fight for them, now and always.
Many Afghan political activists on social media believe Ashraf Ghani and his administration hold grudges against those lawmakers that opposed them in the past years when they tried to impose unlawful bills and forced and bribed MPs to approve them. The list of disqualified MPs is a mix of corrupted lawmakers and those who acted as an opposition to the government.
